How can you support your skin’s recovery, post procedure? We ask top London cosmetic doctor, Pamela Benito for her expert tips on how to care for your skin immediately after a facial rejuvenating treatment if you are back in clinic this month after lockdown:
- What should I expect after my facial procedure?
Dr Pamela Benito: Facial rejuvenation treatments offer a non-surgical way of preventing and reducing the signs of ageing on the face and neck. After your facial aesthetic procedure, it is common to expect redness, stinging, mild swelling, and bruising around the treated area. All of these potential side effects will usually subside within 24-48 hours after your treatment, so don’t worry! Very occasionally, you can experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and/or mild allergic reactions. Yet even in these rare cases they are temporary and resolve themselves in a few days or weeks.
- How can the products I apply directly post procedure help support my skin’s recovery?
Dr Pamela Benito: If you apply the right post-procedure products, they will help the healing process and strengthen your skin barrier instead of weakening it.
I use and recommend highly Orveda’s specially formulated post procedure skincare range; developed with plastic surgeon, Dr Patrick Bui specifically for clients to use after treatments it contains their signature mix of prebiotics, bio-fermented marine enzymes and bio-fermented Kombucha black tea, to help heal the skin’s natural moisture barriers and promote healthy skin microflora.
It is key to have good skincare products and a regime that complements and enhances your facial treatments so you can achieve the best aesthetic results.
- Is there anything I should NOT use on my skin?
Dr Pamela Benito: Yes, you shouldn’t apply make-up for 6 hours after your treatment, unless it is mineral based. Be gentle with your skin when face washing and lay-off any face scrubs for a week as over-exfoliating can damage your skin’s protective layer and lead to inflammation.
- What lifestyle tips do you recommend for 24-72 hours post procedure?
Dr Pamela Benito: It is advisable to avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours, avoid UV exposure and extreme heat (sauna, steam rooms, sun beds), and any facial massage or skin resurfacing until the treated area has healed fully.
Wear sunscreen SPF50 daily, and avoid any retinoids and at-home peels (such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid etc). Drink plenty of water and keep your skin hydrated!
